Ethiopian officials have blocked social media sites across the country during university entrance examinations to prevent students from being "distracted", a government spokesman has told AFP news agency. Some leaked examination papers were posted online last month forcing the exams to be scrapped.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Viber are not accessible in the Ethiopia since Saturday.
Ethiopia's communication has announced the ban of social media sites will continue until the national school examination is concluded on Wednesday.
"It's blocked. It's a temporary measure until Wednesday. Social media have proven to be a distraction for students," Ethiopian government spokesman Getachew Reda is quoted as saying.
Citizens are complaining about the ban on social media. Prominent Ethiopian blogger Daniel Berhane condemned the move saying "This is a dangerous precedent. There is no transparency about who took the decision and for how long."
